Bees and honey

Another kind of animal husbandry, though less widespread, was keeping bees, which were raised in horizontal hives consisting of woven baskets covered in cow dung.

The honey produced by the bees was a prized ingredient used in desserts and sweetmeats such as mostillo (mead), which could also be made from wine, and wax, which was used to make a range of everyday products.
