In 1972 the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) approved the Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage, which provides a framework for identifying, protecting and preserving cultural and natural heritage around the entire world that is regarded as being of special value to Humanity.

In 2003, the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage was adopted and work began with communities around the world to identify, protect and enhance cultural expressions inscribed on the various ICH lists.
