Fauna

The Pyrenees-Monte Perdido World Heritage Site contains a large selection of the Pyrenean fauna associated in the main with Alpine and sub-Alpine ecosystems.

So far, some 50 species of mammals have been recorded, along with at least 80 nesting birds, seven species of amphibian, 13 species of reptiles and four species of fish.

The enormous diversity of plant formations in the area of the World Heritage Site enables each of the various species of animals here to find the ideal environmental conditions they require for their dens, nests, etc., for finding food and for breeding.

The Monte Perdido massif is a climate crossroads where Mediterranean and Atlantic conditions converge. This, together with the steep gradient and high altitudes, has resulted in the presence of diverse species of fauna that are not always found in the same area.
